PHI Anonymization

EDI Paisan's anonymization feature removes Protected Health Information (PHI) from your EDI files, creating sanitized versions safe for testing, training, and sharing — without the compliance risk.

What Is PHI Anonymization?

PHI anonymization replaces identifiable patient and provider information with synthetic data while preserving the file's structure and validity. The result is a fully functional EDI file that can be:

  • Shared with vendors without a BAA
  • Used for training and documentation
  • Submitted to support teams for troubleshooting
  • Included in demos and presentations

The original data never leaves your browser. Only the anonymized version is downloadable or shareable.

Why Anonymize?

Vendor Support

Got a file that's failing validation? Need help from your clearinghouse or software vendor? Sending the raw file means sharing patient SSNs, addresses, and medical information — a HIPAA violation waiting to happen.

With anonymization, you can share the exact file structure causing your problem without exposing real patient data.

Training & Documentation

Teaching new staff how to read EDI files? Building internal documentation? Real patient files are off-limits, but anonymized files let you show real-world examples safely.

Development & Testing

Building integrations? Testing workflows? Anonymized files let your dev team work with production-realistic data without access to actual PHI.

Demos & Sales

Showing clients what their data will look like? Use anonymized versions of real files to demonstrate accurate representations without compliance concerns.

What Gets Anonymized?

EDI Paisan identifies and replaces PHI across all supported transaction types:

What Stays the Same?

Anonymization preserves the clinical and structural elements that make the file useful for analysis:

  • Procedure codes (CPT, HCPCS)
  • Diagnosis codes (ICD-10)
  • Place of service codes
  • Adjustment reason codes (CARC/RARC)
  • Service dates (optionally shifted)
  • Dollar amounts
  • File structure and envelopes
  • Transaction types and loops

This means an anonymized file still shows real claim scenarios, real denial patterns, and real payment calculations — just with fake people and places.

Tier Requirements

FeatureFreeProEnterprise
Preview anonymized data
Download anonymized EDI file
Download redacted CSV exports
Audit package (ZIP)

Free tier users can view anonymized content in the browser — great for understanding what the feature does. To actually download and share anonymized files, you'll need Pro or higher.

How It Works

  1. Upload your file — Load any supported EDI file (837, 835, 270, 271)
  2. Click Anonymize — EDI Paisan identifies all PHI elements
  3. Preview changes — See what will be replaced before downloading
  4. Download — Export the anonymized EDI file (Pro tier)

All processing happens in your browser. The original file and patient data never touch our servers.

Audit Package (Pro)

For 835 remittance files, Pro tier includes a downloadable audit package (ZIP) containing:

FileContents
Original 835 EDIThe source file for reference
Redacted EDIPHI-removed version of the 835
CSV ExportsPayment data in spreadsheet format

This package provides everything needed for appeals, audits, and compliance documentation — with PHI properly redacted.

Limitations

Not Reversible

Anonymization is one-way. There's no way to recover original values from an anonymized file. Always keep your original files.

Dates May Shift

Service dates and date of birth are replaced with synthetic values. Date relationships (service date before payment date, etc.) are preserved, but specific dates will change.

Custom Fields

EDI Paisan anonymizes standard X12 healthcare elements. Proprietary or non-standard data in REF or N1 loops may not be detected. Always review the preview before sharing.

HIPAA Considerations

Anonymization helps with HIPAA compliance by removing the 18 identifiers that make data "protected":

  • Names
  • Geographic data smaller than state
  • Dates (except year) related to an individual
  • Phone/fax numbers
  • Email addresses
  • SSN
  • Medical record numbers
  • Health plan beneficiary numbers
  • Account numbers
  • Certificate/license numbers
  • Vehicle identifiers
  • Device identifiers
  • URLs
  • IP addresses
  • Biometric identifiers
  • Full-face photos
  • Any other unique identifying number

EDI Paisan's anonymization addresses the identifiers commonly found in healthcare EDI transactions.

WARNING

Anonymization is a tool, not a compliance guarantee. Always verify anonymized files meet your organization's privacy requirements before sharing.
